When a feature decides your architecture

The bench runs three pieces of software I wrote: benchhud on the bench itself, bench-parts holding inventory, and benchhud-intake taking work in.

Three services for a one-person repair bench sounds like someone enjoying microservices a bit too much. It isn’t — or at least, it isn’t only that. The split is a privacy boundary, and one feature drew the line.

The feature

benchhud composites everything on the bench into one window and pushes that composite out as a virtual camera, so OBS can pick it up and I can stream a repair.

Every recipe app is a hostage situation

You put your recipes in an app. The app is nice. Then it gets acquired, or adds a subscription, or the export button gives you a JSON blob with the ingredients as one unparseable string. Meanwhile the recipes themselves — the actual thing you cared about, some of them from people who aren’t around to ask again — are inside somebody’s product decisions.

Job hunting is a state management problem

Nobody tells you this part. The interviews are the hard bit emotionally, but the thing that actually grinds you down is the bookkeeping — who you applied to, when, through what channel, which recruiter said what, who you owe a follow-up, which of the four roles at the same company you’re actually in the pipeline for.

Most people do it in a spreadsheet. I did too, for a while.
